Publishing IP addresses and European Union (EU) Privacy laws

LongTail publishes IP addresses of sites that have attempted to login to one of the LongTail honeypots. While LongTail runs in the United States of America, and is not under their jurisdiction, we believe that publishing IP addresses is legal under the EU privacy laws.

In particular, the following three websites concur with this opinion

  1. www.blocklist.de is run in Germany and actively publishes IP addresses of not just ssh attackers, but spammers as well.
  2. IP addresses and the Data Protection Act, an article written in 2008 about IP addresses and personally identifiable data which says we are OK since we are not tying the IP address to a person.
  3. IP addresses in server logs not personal data which again states the same thing.
